Darby Junior High Additions & Renovations
Overview
MAHG’s design for a new band room and female athletic facilities (2017) and Science Center (2005) transformed both the school’s appearance and message. By focusing on the performing arts, athletics, and science, the new additions urge the students to pursue extracurricular involvement as well as a deeper pursuit of knowledge.
With the band room, acoustics and lighting were given careful consideration. The large room allows for natural light to stream through during the day, creating an calm, open space for students practicing and hanging out. Support spaces such as a director’s office, instrument and uniform storage, and bathrooms were also included in this project. At the same time, the athletics additions which include two female locker rooms, restroom facilities, and coaches offices bring newer facilities to the department, encouraging participation.
The Science Center offers the maximum space for a small footprint by utilizing four stories; included in the addition are five science classrooms, three general-use classrooms, and a laboratory. The main corridor is composed primarily of glass and set away from the existing wall to allow light to penetrate to the lower levels.
