Morrison Elementary School Additions & Renovations
Overview
MAHG’s design focuses on the teaching and learning environment with the goal of creating more productive, interactive spaces; these spaces provide opportunity for true growth among the students. Prior to the renovations, the elementary school consisted of several large, open spaces sub-divided into classroom-sized areas with loose furniture. MAHG’s design featured more permanent, secure, and scaled classrooms as well as a few multi-functional spaces. The new classrooms express a sense of importance, hopefully inspiring those who use them.
The addition to this school accommodates 350 students and includes new classrooms, an entrance lobby, an administrative suite, and a dining room with a stage, bathroom, and storage area; renovations were made to enlarge the existing kitchen, library, and multi-purpose room.
During construction, the primarily post-tensioned concrete tee structure combined with an existing curvilinear plan layout pressed the architectural and consultant teams to introduce innovative techniques. The result is a unique structure that stands out in its neighborhood while being a central part of it.
